A lot of backyards in the Kansas City area have the same problem - there's a deck or existing patio, but not nearly enough flat usable space to actually enjoy the yard. That's exactly what we were dealing with here in Platte City. The existing concrete under the deck was fine, but it just wasn't enough room.
We extended the concrete slab out significantly, giving this family a much larger outdoor living area that connects seamlessly with what was already there. The finish is clean and consistent, and the new slab runs the full length of the back of the home. More room for chairs, a grill, kids running around - whatever they need.
Water management was a big part of this job too. When you add concrete and change how a yard slopes, you have to think about where rain is going to go. We built a block retaining wall along the edge of the new slab to redirect water away from the patio instead of letting it pool against the house. The wall is stepped down neatly and topped with cap block - it looks intentional, not just functional.
On the side of the home, we laid a full rock bed along the foundation. It's a low-maintenance solution that keeps that area clean, controls erosion, and is ready for plants or a garden bed down the road whenever they're ready for it. These kinds of details make a yard easier to live in and easier to take care of long-term.
This is the kind of project we love - concrete work paired with a retaining wall and drainage solution that actually solves a problem, not just adds square footage. The yard is more functional now, and it looks sharp doing it.
