Some backyards just aren't working for the people who own them. This one in Platte City had gravel covering most of the usable space - not exactly ideal if you want a lawn your family can actually enjoy. The homeowner wanted a clean reset, and that's exactly what we set out to deliver.

Before any sod goes down, the ground has to be prepped right. We brought in a Toro Dingo compact track loader to clear out the gravel and work the soil. That kind of equipment makes a big difference - it handles the heavy lifting quickly and lets us grade the area properly without tearing up what's already there.

Once the gravel was out, we brought in fresh topsoil to give the new sod a solid base to root into. This step matters more than most people realize. Sod laid over poor or compacted soil struggles to establish, and you end up with patchy, uneven results. A good base is what separates a lawn that lasts from one that doesn't.

With the ground ready, we laid the sod across the entire backyard area - running it fence line to fence line in clean, tight rows. What was a bare, gravel-covered mess is now a green, usable lawn. The kind of space where kids can actually run around and the yard finally feels like part of the home again.

Gravel-to-grass conversions like this are one of our favorite types of jobs because the difference is immediate and obvious. If your backyard is more of a headache than a hangout spot, a full sod installation with proper ground prep is one of the most straightforward ways to fix that.
