Sometimes a front yard just needs a defined starting point. Before we got to work, the foundation area had overgrown shrubs crowding the entry and no real structure holding the bed together. There was no clean edge, no separation between the lawn and the planting area - just a soft, messy look that made the whole front of the house feel unfinished.

Here's what we did: we pulled out the old overgrowth, built a brand-new curved retaining wall along the front of the bed, and filled it in with clean decorative rock. That combination does a few things at once. The wall holds the bed in place so rock and soil don't migrate into the lawn. The rock replaces high-maintenance plantings with something that looks sharp year-round and requires almost zero upkeep.

The retaining wall itself follows the natural curve of the bed and sits flush against the foundation, wrapping neatly around the entry steps. The block has a split-face texture with a dark charcoal finish that ties in well with the gray and cream tones of the house. Details like that matter - the wall isn't just functional, it's part of the look.

What you get at the end of this kind of work is a front yard that actually has a focal point. The entry feels intentional. The house looks more pulled-together from the street. And you're not going to be out there every summer fighting weeds or replacing plants that keep dying in a tough spot.

A well-built retaining wall in a landscape bed like this isn't just about aesthetics - it's about keeping everything where it belongs, season after season. If your front yard is in a similar spot, this kind of work is one of the most straightforward ways to get a big visual return without a complicated project.
